What to Wear - Sunflower Field Mini Sessions

You have booked your sunflower field session. You are excited. And then you open your closet and stare at it for ten full minutes wondering what on earth you are supposed to wear in front of a field of giant yellow flowers.

I hear this from almost every client. So let us settle this once and for all -- here is exactly what to wear (and what to absolutely avoid) for your sunflower field photoshoot.

The Colour Palette That Works Every Time

Sunflower fields have a very specific vibe -- warm, golden, earthy, lush. Your outfit should complement that, not compete with it. The colours that photograph beautifully against sunflowers are:

• Rust and terracotta -- warm tones that echo the earthy field perfectly
• Sage and olive green -- natural tones that blend beautifully with the greenery
• Cream and warm white -- soft and elegant against the yellow blooms
• Mustard yellow -- yes, you can wear yellow in a sunflower field and it looks stunning
• Dusty pink and mauve -- a beautiful contrast that photographs with warmth
• Camel and tan -- neutral, timeless, and incredibly versatile

What to Avoid

• Stark bright white -- it blows out in outdoor light and creates harsh contrast
• Neon or very bright colours -- they pull focus from your face and look jarring against nature
• Busy patterns and large logos -- stripes, bold florals, and graphic tees distract from the connection in the image
• Matching outfits head to toe -- coordinated is beautiful, identical is awkward. Aim to complement, not clone.

What to Wear -- By Who

For Mamas

Flowy maxi dresses are your best friend in an outdoor field session. They move beautifully, photograph with elegance, and are incredibly flattering. A rust or sage wrap dress, a cream linen maxi, or a dusty pink floral gown all work wonderfully. Avoid stiff fabrics -- movement adds life to outdoor photos.

For Dads

Keep it simple. Dark jeans or chinos with a linen shirt in a neutral -- white, cream, sage, camel, or a soft chambray blue. Roll the sleeves. Skip the graphic tee. You do not need to be fancy, you just need to be intentional.

For Kids

Little ones in a sunflower field is already adorable -- the outfit just needs to stay out of the way of that cuteness. For girls, floral or solid dresses in warm tones look magical. For boys, khakis or linen trousers with a simple shirt. Avoid superhero logos and anything with large text. And bring a spare outfit if your toddler is in that phase -- you know the one.

For Couples

Coordinate without matching. Pick a colour palette -- say, rust and cream -- and each choose something within it. You should look like you belong together, not like you work at the same store. One person in a flowy rust dress and the other in cream linen trousers and a white shirt is perfection.

A Note on Shoes

You will be in a field -- so heels are a no. Sandals, white sneakers, or bare feet all work beautifully. For kids, let them go barefoot if they want to. There is something about tiny bare feet in a sunflower field that just gets me every time.

Hair, Makeup and Accessories

For outdoor sessions in late August, keep hair and makeup natural and polished -- not overdone. A loose braid, soft waves, or a simple updo all photograph beautifully in a field setting. Avoid very heavy or bold makeup that does not look like you on a good day.

Accessories? Yes, please. Simple gold jewellery, a delicate necklace, earrings that catch the light -- all of these add a finishing touch without distracting. For little girls, a simple flower crown or ribbon in their hair is always a yes from me.

Skip the big statement sunglasses (they hide your face -- the whole point of the photos) and heavy scarves or chunky knits. Late August in the Pacific Northwest is still warm enough to keep it light and summery.
