There's a moment most new parents describe the same way.
You're sitting in the hospital, your baby is finally here, and somewhere between the exhaustion and the overwhelming love, someone says — "did you book a photographer?"
If the answer is no, this post is for you. If the answer is yes but you're still three months away from your due date — perfect. You're in exactly the right place.
The window everyone misses
The most magical window for newborn photography is the first 5 to 21 days after birth. During this time, babies are naturally sleepy, curly, and flexible — they fall into those beautiful tucked poses that make newborn photos so iconic. They sleep through almost everything. They still have that fresh, brand-new softness.
After two weeks, babies become more alert, more opinionated, and much harder to pose. The wrinkly fingers start to plump up. The sleepy curls give way to stretching. It happens fast — genuinely faster than you can imagine when you're in the thick of it.
This isn't about pressure. It's about possibility. Booking early simply means you don't have to scramble.
So when should you actually book?
The answer surprises most people: book during end of second trimester.
Ideally between 20 and 28 weeks. Here's why this matters more than most photographers will tell you:
Good newborn photographers in the Sammamish and Bellevue area book up 2 to 3 months in advance. Popular months — especially spring and fall — fill up incredibly fast. If you wait until your baby arrives to reach out, there's a real chance your preferred photographer has no availability in that precious first-week window.
When you book early, your photographer holds a tentative spot around your due date and adjusts once baby arrives. You don't pay for anything you don't use. You just secure your place on the calendar — and one less thing to worry about in the final weeks of pregnancy.
What to expect at a Sammamish newborn session
A lot of parents come in nervous because they've never done this before. Here's what the experience actually looks like:
Sessions at my Sammamish studio typically run 2 to 3 hours — but we go entirely at your baby's pace. If baby needs to feed, we stop. If baby needs a cuddle, we stop. There is no rushing. The entire session is designed around keeping your baby comfortable, safe, and content.
I provide all wraps, props, outfits, and setups. You don't need to bring a single thing except your baby, yourselves, and a feeding ready to go. Parent and sibling photos are included, so the whole family gets to be part of this memory.
What if my baby arrives early or late?
This is the most common question I get, and the answer is simple — a good photographer will always work with you to reschedule around your actual birth date. Babies don't follow calendars, and your photographer shouldn't either.
At Meena Photo Studio, I hold flexible slots around your estimated due date so that whenever your little one decides to arrive, we can make it work within that golden window.
What about older siblings?
Yes, absolutely — and the results are always the sweetest images in the gallery. I recommend bringing siblings in towards the end of the session once baby is settled and posed, so we capture those tender big-brother and big-sister moments without disrupting the flow.
After the session — what happens next?
Within 2 to 3 weeks of your session, you'll receive a preview gallery of 50 to 100 watermarked images to browse at home. You choose your favourites at your own pace — no rushing, no pressure. Once your selection is in, I edit every chosen image and deliver your final high-resolution gallery, ready to download, print, and treasure for the rest of your life.
Prints can also be ordered directly through me — I work with professional labs and deliver straight to your door.
The one thing I want you to take away
These first days with your newborn will be the most overwhelming, beautiful, exhausted, magical days of your life. You will not remember to take photos. You will be too busy falling in love.
That's my job. Let me take care of it.
