"Pregnancy is one of the most fleeting, beautiful seasons of your life — and it deserves to be beautifully remembered."
You're glowing. You're growing. And somewhere between nursery prep and prenatal appointments, a little voice whispers: I should capture this. If you've been wondering when to book your maternity photoshoot — or whether to book one at all — this guide is for you.
As a maternity photographer based in Sammamish, WA serving families across the Seattle Eastside, I've photographed hundreds of expecting mamas. Here's everything I wish every mom-to-be knew before their session.
The golden window: when to schedule your session
The sweet spot for most maternity sessions is between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. At this stage, your belly is beautifully round and prominent, your energy is still good, and you're comfortable enough to move and pose with ease.
Booking earlier? Around 26–28 weeks is perfectly fine, especially if you want an outdoor session during a specific season. Booking later? Absolutely possible — some mamas pop perfectly at 36 weeks. The key is to book early, even if your session is still weeks away. My calendar fills up quickly, especially in spring and fall.
Studio or outdoor? Choosing the right setting for you
One of the first decisions you'll make is whether you want a studio maternity session or an outdoor maternity session — and honestly, both are breathtaking in different ways.
Studio Sessions
My in-home studio in Sammamish is designed to feel warm, relaxed, and completely stress-free. The controlled lighting means consistent, magazine-worthy images regardless of the weather outside — which, if you're an Eastside mama, you'll know is not always cooperative! Studio sessions are perfect for more intimate, editorial-style portraits and for mamas who want a luxurious, private experience.
Outdoor sessions
The Pacific Northwest is spectacular — lush greenery, soft golden light, and breathtaking backdrops right on our doorstep. Outdoor maternity sessions in Sammamish and the greater Seattle Eastside area are magical, especially in spring and summer. If you're dreaming of flowing fabric in a meadow or a sunset session at a lake, an outdoor shoot might be your perfect fit.

What to wear: outfit ideas for your maternity photos
Outfit choice can feel overwhelming, but it doesn't need to be. Here are some tried-and-true tips from someone who has styled and photographed hundreds of maternity sessions.
Outfit tips that photograph beautifully
- Flowy, form-fitting gowns in neutral tones (blush, ivory, sage, dusty blue) photograph timelessly
- Form-fitting bodysuits or wrap dresses that celebrate your bump are always stunning
- Avoid busy patterns or large logos — they can distract from your beautiful shape
- Don't forget your partner! Coordinating (not matching) outfits create a cohesive, polished look
- Access to my exclusive client closet means you don't need to buy a thing — just show up!
How to prepare for your maternity session
The best photos happen when you feel comfortable, confident, and cared for. Here's what I recommend in the days leading up to your session:
Stay hydrated and get a good night's rest before your shoot. If you're planning a studio session, feel free to bring a small snack — I always have water and light refreshments on hand. If you want to add hair and makeup, booking a professional MUA will elevate your photos enormously and help you feel like the goddess you are.
Most importantly: trust the process. I'll guide you through every pose and angle. You don't need experience in front of a camera — you just need to show up. I take care of the rest.
What makes a great maternity photographer?
When choosing a maternity photographer in the Sammamish or Seattle Eastside area, look for someone whose portfolio makes you feel something — warmth, joy, emotion. Check that they have experience posing pregnant women safely and comfortably, and that their style aligns with the aesthetic you're drawn to.
A great maternity session isn't just about beautiful photos. It's about feeling seen and celebrated during one of the most transformative chapters of your life. That's what I'm here for.
