So you've booked your maternity session (yay! 🎉) and now the panic sets in: "What on earth do I wear?"

Don't worry — you're not alone. This is genuinely the #1 question I get from Seattle mamas before their session. And the good news? It's way simpler than you think.

But first — before we even get into outfit tips, let me tell you a little secret: my Sammamish studio has a full maternity gown closet stocked with flowing silks, lace wraps, and luxe fabrics in a range of sizes — and it's included in every session. So if the thought of shopping for a maternity photoshoot outfit makes you want to cry into your pregnancy pillow, breathe easy. I've got you covered. Literally.

That said, many mamas love bringing their own pieces too — and mixing studio gowns with personal outfits gives you the most variety. So here's everything you need to know!

The Golden Rules of Maternity Photoshoot Outfits

1. Show that bump! This sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised how many mamas instinctively reach for loose, flowy tops that hide their belly. We're here to celebrate that bump, not camouflage it. Form-fitting fabrics, wrap dresses, and body-con styles all work beautifully.

2. Stick to solid colors or subtle textures - Bold patterns, logos, and busy prints draw the eye away from YOU. Stick to:

Soft neutrals — cream, ivory, taupe, blush

Deep rich tones — burgundy, forest green, navy

Earthy tones — terracotta, sage, dusty rose

Classic white or black

Seattle's lush green PNW backdrop looks stunning with earthy and neutral tones, especially during golden-hour outdoor sessions.

3. Think fabric, not just style- The best maternity photos have movement and texture. Fabrics that photograph beautifully:

✅ Chiffon and silk — floaty and gorgeous

✅ Lace — timeless and feminine

✅ Jersey knit — form-fitting and comfortable

✅ Velvet — rich and luxurious for fall/winter

❌ Shiny synthetic fabrics — reflect light awkwardly

❌ Busy prints — distracting in photos

What to Bring to Your Seattle Maternity Session

I recommend 2–3 outfit options for variety without feeling overwhelmed. A winning combination:

Look 1 — The Showstopper: A long flowing gown from my studio closet. This is usually everyone's favorite — the dramatic, magazine-worthy one you'll frame above the fireplace.

Look 2 — The Personal One Something that feels like you — maybe a dress your partner loves, or something that matches your nursery aesthetic. This one often captures the most genuine emotions.

Look 3 — The Casual/Intimate (optional) A soft robe, a cozy knit, or a simple bra and flowy skirt for intimate belly shots. These often become the most treasured images.

What About Hair & Makeup?

Hair: Loose waves or soft curls photograph beautifully. Tight updos can look harsh. Even just a blowout makes a big difference!

Makeup: Go slightly heavier than your everyday look — cameras tend to wash out features. A little extra mascara and a defined lip go a long way.

Nails: If you're doing bare belly shots, freshly done nails are a nice touch! 💅

What NOT to Wear

Let's save you from some common mistakes:

❌ Graphic tees — unless "World's Okayest Mom" is your personal brand 😄

❌ Overly casual loungewear — save the sweats for after the session

❌ Anything uncomfortable — if you can't breathe, it shows in photos

❌ Tight waistbands — they leave marks on skin. Arrive in something loose and change when you get here!

❌ New shoes that hurt — you'll be standing for up to 2 hours

What About Partners & Kids?

Partners: Stick to neutral solid colors that complement mama's outfits. Dark jeans and a simple shirt always works. Avoid logos and busy patterns.

Kids/Toddlers: Match loosely to mama's color palette. Comfort is key — a happy toddler in comfy clothes beats a miserable toddler in a perfect outfit. Trust me. 😄

Seattle-Specific Tip: Plan for the Weather

If you're doing an outdoor maternity session in Seattle or the Eastside:

Bring a cozy wrap or cardigan for between shots

Schedule for golden hour (1–2 hours before sunset) for the most flattering light

My Sammamish studio means we're never at the mercy of Seattle's weather ☔ — we can always move indoors!
